TLC's Iconic Journey Heads to the Stage in 'CrazySexyCool' Musical

The Crazy Sexy Cool musical, long-anticipated to pay homage to the legendary girl group TLC, will hit the boards at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., becoming an integral part of that venue's celebratory 75th season. Previews will begin on June 12, 2026, in the Kreeger Theatre until August 9 of that same year. Above all, it hopes to encapsulate the cultural influences, personal struggles, and chart-topping legacies of TLC

A Creative Vision Fueled by Experience and Talent

The unique aspect of this musical is that Kwame Kwei-Armah still writes and directs the project just as he did for the previous work, One Love: The Bob Marley Musical. He, yet again, shows his expertise in bringing musical legends to life with this new production. Nevertheless, he won't work alone; choreographer Chloe O. Davis will enable the resurrection of TLC's famed dance styles. Unlike mystical creatures who have had countless lives, CrazySexyCool is set to employ every beloved anthem "---Pocky and Roti" that defined a generation; "No Scrubs," "Waterfalls," "Unpretty," and "Creep." Those heavy-duty titles provide the backbone of this musical, linking its story to the beat that once ruled the airwaves.

TLC Members Express Their Excitement and Support

Although the precise level of the group’s involvement remains uncertain, Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas have publicly endorsed the project. On the contrary, rather than staying hands-off, the surviving members seem emotionally invested in the outcome. Watkins described the upcoming musical as “a dream come true” and “an exciting new challenge.” Likewise, Thomas highlighted the authenticity behind the storytelling, assuring fans it’s “mostly fact with a sprinkle of fiction,” told in their unique voice. Nevertheless, both artists see this as an opportunity to share their truth with old and new fans.

Honoring Lisa ‘Left Eye’ Lopes and TLC’s Lasting Impact

The musical celebrates in joy but also pays tribute to a very moving part of TLC, the death of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes in 2002. Lopes was killed when her car crashed during a vacation in Honduras, a fact that changed the overall dynamic of the group dramatically. And yet, her legacy will live on through this production, with her story and influence embedded in every scene. According to Bill Diggins of Diggit Theatrical Group, the musical is more than just a soundtrack. It’s “a story about sisterhood,” capturing the emotional strength and unity that helped the group overcome immense adversity.

A Look Back at TLC’s Continued Journey

After Lopes’ passing, TLC released their final studio album, 3D, which came shortly after her death and marked the end of a vibrant era. Nonetheless, the group refused to let their journey end there. In 2015, they launched a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund a new album, ultimately raising $430,255, making it the platform’s most supported music project ever. Surprisingly, pop star Katy Perry was among the first donors to back their vision. In contrast to earlier releases, their 2017 self-titled album, TLC, marked a modern return while staying true to their signature style. And still, their story continues to resonate worldwide.

More updates regarding ticket sales, casting, and behind-the-scenes footage will be shared in the coming months. Until then, fans can join the official mailing list to receive first-hand information about this long-awaited tribute to one of music’s most influential female groups.
